San Francisco
Quick trip out to the west coast for GraphConnect SF 2015. I was able to arrange my flights to allow a day of tramping around the the city before returning home. I did not pack well for the amount of sunlight and warm weather. While I was sweating walking around, I consistently encountered natives wearing scarves and hats.
I breezed through a bunch of the tourist sights:
- Dragon's gate
- Ferry Terminal
- Pier 39
- Fisherman's Wharf
- Lombard Street
- Palace of Fine Arts
There were no tickets available to Alcatraz, so I comforted myself by spending a bunch of time in the USS Pampanito. I love old physical controls. It's amazing that on one ship there can be so many different interface metaphors. Of course, reading all the maker marks on them reveals that they were all made by different companies. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to operate so many different controls under pressure or in the dark. Crazy.
After walking all the way out to the Palace of Fine Arts: it was time for beer. Uber'ed over to the City Beer Store for some choice beers and excellent conversation. After learning how close Cellarmaker Brewing was, I made the quick walk over there to sample some of their wares.
All in all, a good quick trip.
